What is a Soft Water Loop?

Posted by Ryan Forest

Soft water loops are also sometimes called water softener loops. A soft water loop is basically a U-shaped section of pipe that comes out of the wall, usually in the garage.

Normally, the water service pipe passes through the wall of the garage unnoticed. If you have a softener loop, it should be obvious. Soft water loops are best installed when the home is built, but they can also be installed at any time, if there is no concern about soft water being supplied to every fixture in the house. Otherwise, the renovations can be much more extensive.

A simple water softener loop comes out of the wall, elbows over to a short length of pipe then elbows back into the wall. If you see this U-shaped configuration in your garage wall, it is likely a loop intended for a future water softener installation. It is typically very recognizable and are typically made of copper pipe and copper fittings.

A water softener loop can be cut to open and tap into the water service coming into the home. This is where a water softener appliance can be installed to supply soft water to the house. A soft water system is a must-have feature for many homeowners.
