How to Locate Your Water Heater Pressure Valve

Posted by Rainforest_Admin

You might be nervous messing with your water heater relief valve, but don’t sweat it! Once you find it and learn how your valve works, then it is a piece of cake.

Remember, you can always call your plumber if you are unsure of things, they can come out and teach you the ins and outs of your water heater pressure valve.

Finding the Water Heater Pressure Valve

The pressure valve is usually located right by the water heater. Typically, there is a lever to lift up or down. When turned on, the valve then releases the water, so it lowers the pressure inside of the tank. This prevents the tank from getting too full to handle, which can easily explode and cause costly damages.

You should get in the habit of testing your valve annually because annual maintenance ensures safe and optimal function…another reason we love preventative maintenance at Rainforest Plumbing and Air!

Opening the Water Heater Pressure Valve

Now that you have located the valve, then it is time to open it!

Why should you do this? To ensure that it works properly by checking for any leaks and relieving built-up pressure.

If the valve is not working or you do notice a leak, then it is time to call your trusted plumber. They will be able to inspect the issue and either repair it or suggest a replacement. Is your water heater old or constantly giving you issues? It just might be time to upgrade!

Before attempting to open the valve, always read the tank’s owner manual. Most require you to just lift the valve until the brass stem that is attached rises. Hot water should then rush out from the bottom of the tank. Push the lever back down to close the valve and stop the water from flowing.
